I joined the one day Part-Time Gamekeepers course run by GWCT at their HQ in Fordingbridge, Hampshire. After a pretty intense morning in the class room covering theory, law, practice and history of gamekeeping and a hands on session introducing the current legal range of traps and snares for pest control, we headed out to the Bisterne Estate to meet head keeper Rupert Brewer, bronze winner 2024 Purdey Awards for Game & Conservation. Fantastic opportunity to see how a large estate is managed for shooting and for wildlife and to see how conservation works at this scale. Some great take aways and really got me thinking what we might be able to do on our small shoot. I'd definitely recommend the day to anyone who is running a small shoot or is interested in what goes on behind the scenes during a season. The most important thing according to Rupert is predator control and management. Without this, they wouldn't have waders nesting on the estate and they wouldn't be achieving and impressive 40% plus return on their released birds.
