Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, a disease hitherto found mostly in alcoholics is now increasing been seen in kids.

Sugar (in many avatars), food processing, supermarkets, and marketing. We gave our kids fruit juice instead of fruits. We fed them cornflakes (processed sugar) instead of poha. We served them bread instead of parathas. We started shopping more at supermarkets. Our kids ate anything that has their favorite cartoon characters. Parents fell for buy-one-get-one free. There are no free lunches. And our kids are paying the price.

Sugar is 50% glucose and 50% fructose. Glucose is used for ‘production’ of energy. Fructose has no metabolic function today. In the past, it was used by our ancestor to ‘store’ energy by making us fat to survive winter months (food foraging was tougher). Most metabolism of fructose happens in the Liver. And doesn’t matter whether the sugar comes from dates, gud, honey or simple table sugar.

Most dangerous is ‘liquid sugar’ found in fruits juices, colas, energy drinks, and Frappuccino from your favorite sugarbucks store. This gets absorbed much faster through the blood and into the portal vein to the liver:
