Welcome to this Learning Mole video!
In this video, we are going to learn what a Rangoli is and how it is used in Indian art.

Rangoli is a traditional Indian art form that involves creating patterns or designs on the ground using materials such as colored rice, dry flour, colored sand, or flower petals. These designs are typically created in living rooms and courtyards or in front of houses during Indian festivals and celebrations, particularly during the Hindu festival of Diwali.

The term "Rangoli" is derived from the Sanskrit words "Rang" (color) and "Aavalli" (rows or creepers), suggesting a row of colors.

Rangoli designs can be simple geometric shapes, deity impressions, or flower and petal shapes, but they can also be very elaborate and detailed. They are usually symmetrical and are traditionally done by women.

The purpose of Rangoli is to bring good luck, prosperity, and to welcome guests. It's also thought to honor and invite goddess Lakshmi (the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity) into the home.

Each region in India has its own name and style for Rangoli. For example, it's known as Kolam in Tamil Nadu, Chowkpurana in Northern India, Alpana in West Bengal, and so on. Despite the different names and styles, the core purpose and spirit of welcoming and celebrating life remain the same.
