Let’s talk about bone health.
It’s a topic that comes up frequently, especially when talking about menopause. At the same time, it’s something that can affect you for your entire life so it’s not always wise to wait until you hit menopausal age.
So what are your bones there for?
Obviously they keep us upright – if we didn’t have bones, we’d be more like slugs than humans!
They’re also there to protect you. That’s especially true for your ribcage, which protects your heart and lungs from damage. A broken rib is no fun, but a punctured lung is a whole lot worse!
But did you know your bones also have a huge storage capacity for minerals?
We use calcium throughout our bodies, for example. But if we don’t get enough from our diet, your body can draw from your bones.
There are some common disorders related to your bones as well.
The most common is osteoporosis – a decrease in bone density which leads to bone weakness, and therefore a greater risk of fracture. In fact, people often don’t even realize they have osteoporosis until they experience a fracture.
Greater risk factors include thinner people, women, white and Asian people, people with a family history of osteoporosis, and certain medications.
As well, arthritis is a common bone disorder – though the two main types are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
With rheumatoid arthritis, it’s an autoimmune disorder where your immune system attacks your bones, causing widespread inflammation.
Osteoarthritis, on the other hand, is related to general wear and tear of your bones. Most people get some sort of osteoarthritis as they age, just from a breakdown of the cartilage between your bones.
Today, we’ll talk about some useful supplements for bone disorders.
If you’ve been diagnosed with a bone disorder, or you suspect you might have one, I can help.
