Saddam Hussein's chief lawyer walked out of the trial Monday after 12 defense requests were rejected.

Then the chief judge immediately appointed other attorneys to defend the former leader.

And Monday's departure comes on the heals of Khalil al-Dulaimi's (kah-LEEL' ahl-doo-LAY-mee) month long boycott of the trial.

Here's what happened:

When the court session started, al-Dulaimi filed a dozen requests. He had said that he was ending his boycott in order to make the requests.

The chief judge denied the requests. So al-Dulaimi told the court he was leaving. The judge's response? -- "go ahead."

Saddam and six other members of his former regime are defending themselves against charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity for an offensive against Iraqi Kurds in the late 1980s.
