Hello everyone. This is Erik, the Asian Movie Enthusiast.

After “Drive My Car’s” recent nominations for this year’s Academy Awards, I think we need to talk about the “Best Foreign Language Film” award – now known as “Best International Feature Film.” Grab some snacks and a drink, because we’re gonna be here a while.

We will briefly look at Japan’s history of Oscar submissions and nominations during the 20th century – but the meat of this video is going to be a discussion of the last 20+ years – 2000 to 2021. More specifically, (1) who won the award each year; (2) what film Japan selected as its official submission for each year; and (3) whether or not I agree with both of these decisions. This will be presented in a chronological format, as I always like to do.
