The Karnataka cabinet has approved a bill mandating 100 percent reservation for Kannadigas in private firms for Group C and Group D posts.

It also seeks to reserve 50 percent of management jobs and 75 percent of non-management jobs for locals in the private sector.
According to the bill, a local candidate is a person “who is born in the State of Karnataka and who is domiciled in the State for a period of 15 years and who is capable of speaking, reading and writing Kannada in a legible way and has passed a required test conducted by the nodal agency”.

Concerns
It has sparked significant controversy among industry leaders, who argue it is discriminatory and could harm the state’s tech industry.
A similar bill was passed by the Haryana government in November 2020, which mandated 75% reservation for locals in private jobs, only to be struck down by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in November 2023.
