25:21 - Back to the lesson! Lick number 3

Today I’m teaching you three licks that use the Dorian mode in creative ways. These licks showcase a number of musical tools you have at your disposal when improvising with the dorian mode that you may not have been aware of. Please note that this lesson was shot with intermediate and advanced players in mind - ie people who have a good understanding of fundamental music theory, can visualise the fretboard and who have a good degree of technical ability on the instrument.

These include:

A major triad pair built from the 3rd and 4th degrees of the scale
A m7b5 (half-diminished) arpeggio that can be played starting from the major 6th
Tritones between the major 6th and b3
The combined use of dorian and the minor pentatonic/blues scale

It is my hope with this video that I can give you a few lightbulb moments for improvising with modes. When I started learning modes as a teenager, it was all about three note per string shred patterns and little else. I was not even remotely aware of the more creative things you could do with the major scale modes like what I have listed above.

I hope you enjoy this lesson and if you’re interested in learning more licks like this, I have added 5 bonus licks to the EXTRAS section of bulletproofguitarplayer.com for site members.

Thanks again to Neural DSP for sponsoring another video on the channel. Their Soldano SLO-100 plugin provided all of the tones that you hear in this video.
