Altenburg Abbey lies amidst the rolling hills of the Waldviertel (Forest Quarter), the northwestern region of the Austrian state Lower Austria. After being destroyed by the Swedes, it was rebuilt by the Benedictines. In the 18th Century the architect Munggenast undertook a transformation to Baroque, retaining most of the Gothic elements. The most significant frescoes are from Paul Troger.
One is that one of most beautiful Austria the library with her 10.000 volumes. The main cupola shows the visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon in Jerusalem. Underneath the library is the crypt, a meditation room about life and death with some grotesque images, probably the most original cloistral room in the Christian cultural area.
The foundation was built on the ruins of a medieval foundation, the already 1144 was founded by above Rebgau of countess Hildburg. The old cloister is got very well. Foundation Altenburg is famous also for his choirboys and the garden of the religions which tries to represent the different ways to God.

Inmitten der sanften Hügel des Waldviertels liegt das barocke Stift Altenburg. Nach der Zerstörung durch die Schweden wurde es von den Benediktinern wieder aufgebaut und im 18. Jahrhundert vom Baumeister Munggenast unter weitgehender Beibehaltung der gotischen Elemente umgestaltet. Die bedeutendsten Fresken stammen von Paul Troger.
Die Bibliothek mit ihren 10.000 Bänden ist eine der schönsten Österreichs. Die Hauptkuppel zeigt den Besuch der Königin von Saba bei König Salomon in Jerusalem. Unterhalb der Bibliothek befindet sich die Krypta, ein Meditationsraum über Leben und Tod mit teils grotesken Darstellungen, wohl der originellste klösterliche Raum im christlichen Kulturraum.
