Are you a plant lover who travels frequently? Don't worry, your plant babies can thrive while you're away! In this video, I share four tried-and-true methods for keeping houseplants happy and healthy during my travels.
Transform your bathtub into a mini-jungle! Fill it with a few inches of water to hydrate your plants for up to three weeks. This method is perfect for moisture-loving plants like Ctenanthe, Maranta, Prayer Plants, Begonia, and Ferns.
Soak the soil of your houseplants before you leave to ensure long-lasting hydration. For decorative pots without drainage holes, add a few inches of water to the base. This method works well for various plants, including Philodendrons and Monsteras.
Utilise slow-release watering methods for precise hydration. Insert bottles or Terracotta spikes into the soil to provide a steady supply of water. This is ideal for the Bird of Paradise, Monstera Deliciosa and other plants that have higher watering needs.
The string method is running a string from a water source, such as a plant saucer or jar, into the soil of your plant. As the soil dries out, it wicks water up the string so the soil stays damp. This method is great for plants that prefer consistent moisture like the calathea and prayer plants. It can also be used on all plants if travelling for over a week!

This is one of my favourite ways to make a self-watering system for indoor houseplants as it is fairly easy and also cheap and accessible. If you don't have a planter with a dedicated section at the bottom you can always use a plant saucer or a bowl a tray or a jar nearby works fine too.
Make sure your plants still get sunlight! If you close your curtains you will come back to a VERY sad sight.
By combining these techniques, you can ensure your plants remain healthy and vibrant, even while you're away on vacation.

Water plants while on vacation DIY
The bathtub method
I am lucky to live somewhere with great tap water. If yours is not suitable for plants, add whichever water you usually use to the tub.
If you don't have a bathtub or bathroom with natural light. You can use this method in a sink in a bright room as well. Like the laundry or kitchen.
The bowl method
The slow drip method
The string method
