Описание к видео How Britain's Greatest War Hero Was Destroyed by One Disastrous Battle

He charged into Zulu warriors three times to save his men. He won the Victoria Cross for unmatched bravery. He never lost a battle for 20 years. Yet history remembers Sir Redvers Buller as one of Britain's greatest military failures.

In 1879 at Hlobane, Buller repeatedly rode back into 20,000 attacking Zulu warriors to rescue fallen comrades—earning the Victoria Cross and becoming a legend. For two decades he commanded with distinction across Africa, earning his soldiers' devotion by leading from the front and genuinely caring for their welfare.

But the Second Boer War in 1899 destroyed everything. At Colenso, modern Boer firepower shattered his forces—1,200 casualties, ten guns abandoned. Worse, Buller sent a telegram suggesting Ladysmith's garrison consider surrender. The press savaged him. Britain's hero became its scapegoat.

After costly failures at Spion Kop and Vaal Krantz, Buller finally relieved Ladysmith in February 1900—but too late to save his reputation. He was demoted, publicly reprimanded, and forced into retirement, dying in 1908 largely forgotten.

Modern historians argue Buller was unfairly scapegoated—a brilliant small-unit commander thrust into leading a massive conventional army in warfare that previewed WWI's industrial slaughter. His soldiers never forgot his courage. Exeter erected a statue despite establishment opposition.

Was he a failure, or the wrong man for the wrong war? Discover the untold story of Britain's most unfairly judged Victoria Cross hero.
