Bauer is a superb partner for Oistrakh. Schubert's D934 is one of my favorite chamber works. It must be difficult to play and to maintain an overarching cohesion in this work, because I've found few genuinely great performances. Its debut was at an outdoor event but people left out of boredom. This was one of the few of his compositions that Schubert actually saw and heard.
This performance by Oistrakh and Bauer is my favorite. They are tightly united in purpose; she has no trouble keeping up with his gorgeous sound and lively pace. Her even, rippling opening is magnificently executed, a hint of the joys ahead. Oistrakh does some of his most wonderful fiddling in the dances. There is a forward momentum throughout. Another marvelous performance is from father and daughter Claude and Pamela Frank.
