Why are the genetic models for iron oxide - copper - gold and iron oxide - apatite deposits so controversial?

Iron oxide-apatite (IOA) mineral deposits continue to puzzle the geoscience community and have stimulated vigorous debate about how they formed. They contain tens to hundreds of millions of tonnes of iron present dominantly as magnetite, with coeval minor amounts of apatite, actinolite, and/or pyroxene. They are often spatially and temporally associated with iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposits, which have copper grades and tonnages equivalent to and sometimes exceeding porphyry copper deposits. Field relations for IOA and IOCG deposits in the Andean margin require a genetic model that explains IOA deposits must also explain IOCG deposits. In this session, Adam Simon described and discussed field observations and geochemical data that are used to test variable plausible models that explain these systems.
