Computer History: Today we view a partial restoration of a 1960 film announcing IBM's 7070 mainframe, IBM’s first FULLY TRANSISTORIZED stored program computer. This film was lost for over 60 years. Part of the 700/7000 series, the 7070 used 30,000 transistors and 22,000 diodes, on 14,000 SMS circuit boards. This color film has been restored and narration added to bring this system back to life. This excerpt shows the 7070 in operation in an IBM Data Center running a utility billing program called “SURE” for “Symbolic Utilities Revenue Environment.” The 7070 is described in detail and Gallery photos of its advanced successors, the 7074 and 7080 are also included. Color, runs about 6 minutes.
