Can melasma be cured?

⁃ Melasma is a hyperpigmentary disorder commonly seen on the face, especially on the cheeks and the nose as butterfly rash.
⁃ Sometimes on the rest of the face as well. It is common in all genders. It could be genetic, it could occur due to excessive sun exposure or it could also occur due to hormonal imbalances in the body.
⁃ It is very common in pregnancy and its known as chloasma
⁃ When the pigment is epidermal that means it lies in the upper layers of the skin you can cure it with the help of creams and antioxidants as well as tranexamic acid, tablets or injections but if the pigment goes deeper into the dermis it is extremely difficult to get rid of it completely.
⁃ Yes we use Q-switched ND yad lasers low fluence or a Pico laser, we do chemical peels and we also give all kinds of creams but it only helps to reduce the pigment and sometimes you go out in the sun and the entire thing comes back.
⁃ What is really important is sun protection. Use a sunscreen when you are indoors preferably a tinted one which will protect you from blue light as well.
