One Year After Moving To Puerto Rico | Don't Come Without Knowing This

So, it's been a year officially since I moved here to Puerto Rico, and I’m a guy and I’m not that hard to please; but there are a few things that I wish I knew before coming here. And I’m going to tell you the good and ugly and that normal.

1. First of All this is an Island ( which sounds sexy but its really not that sexy )

-Think about it when you think about living in an island you think about

-Things being cheap, going to the beach everyday and going to eat all the time

-But you forget that literally this is spec of dirt surrounded by a body of water, and you forget about logistics ( btw I was born on a little bigger piece of dirt called Dominican republic, and I love it, I don’t mean it in an offensive way )



Food:

-The food here is not amazing or special, it’s the people that are special and amazing and they cook with so much love

-But about 80% of all the food is imported from other places

-So that leads food being a little more expensive ( a lot more expensive )



Cars, Gas and Insurance:

-all this stuff is more expensive, because you have to consider how much more overhead is involved in getting these things here( except for insurance I pay like $150-200 a year and get a marbete which cover like 3k in damangers I think or something like that )



Sale Tax:

-you ever got a paycheck and was like where is the rest of the money and realize it goes to social security and taxes

-well here when you buy something and see that they charged you an extra 11.5% between sales tax and miniciple tax, you realized that things can very expensive



The roads:

-people complain about potholes and I’ve had a tired completely destroyed by a pothole

-but honestly it's not as bad as you think, once you know where they are you know how to avoid them and after a while they get fixed

-but remember Rain, Hot Sun and a lot of traffic equal pot holes



The electricity:

-I went three days without electricity when one of the power factories blew up, think about that 3 days no electricity and no generator

-Omg, the worst part is just that your food go’s bad but if you buy a good generator you will be fine

-And I can count on one hand and one foot the amount of times we lost power is not that bad



Marketing:

-people love new cars here

-people love solar panels here

-a lot of people are not financially educated honestly and that the entire world


2. The Good this Island ( really wants to grow and to prosper and you can tell )


First the people are amazing:

-I’ve made around 5-8 friends in one year, because I’m an introvert and I don’t really like places

-But these people are quality people

Tax incentives to do something:

-You buy a house and its your first one, you pay no property taxes
-You can start a business and save money on taxes
-You can buy a home and get a grant
-You can see a bunch hiring signs

Properties Here are Still Cheap

-You can buy a dilapidated home for 50-90k and fix it up and easily be in for 0

3. Overall if you ask me, know what I know today ( would I move here )

-A lot of good has happened to me while I’ve been here Not because of Puerto rico but because of decisions I’ve made
