The "Ghostbusters" on John Belushi (1984)

I cut this together from some interviews that Bobbie Wygant (of NBC 5 Dallas/Fort Worth) originally conducted in 1984.

I opted to begin with her speaking to Bill Murray about his dramatic turn in The Razor's Edge, which was likely filmed around the time that film was released, so October of '84.

Earlier that summer she had interviewed Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (among others) about Ghostbusters. Judging from Bobbie's apparel, those were all shot on the same day during the Ghostbusters press junket at the Plaza Hotel, in late May of '84.

With Bob Woodward's book Wired coming out, naturally the conversations kept turning to the trio's late colleague John Belushi, who had passed away two years before.

I tried these three snippets in various orders, but felt the sequence Murray-Aykroyd-Ramis worked best. Especially since it allowed me to end with that highly ironic soundbyte from Ramis about his policy on sequels.

I also liked that their reactions play against expectations. Murray seems the one most raw and emotional, Aykroyd calls out some of Belushi's faults, and Ramis smiles and chuckles about fond memories.

Bobbie particularly refers to Murray's 'soliloquy' to Belushi in a scene from The Razor's Edge. For the full effect, watch Piedmont (Brian Doyle-Murray)'s reaction to the loss of two of his comrades in this clip:    • "You wont be missed."
