A taboo-free way to talk about periods | Aditi Gupta | TEDxGatewayWomen
   • A taboo-free way to talk about period...

In India, 3 out of 10 girls are unaware of menstruation at the time of their first periods. Considered "impure" and "unclean", many women are restricted from entering temples, touching food or sitting on furniture during their cycles. Because of this stigma, 88% of women and girls resort to unhygienic ways to manage their periods, resulting in rashes and infection. Aditi Gupta is a social entrepreneur and Co-founder of Menstrupedia, and is committed to breaking the menstruation taboo. In her talk from TEDxGatewayWomen, Aditi introduces the comic book she created to educate young women about their periods in a fun, engaging way.

Drones and the Future of Medicine | Timothy Amukele | TEDxClaremontColleges

High quality lab systems are essential to global public health. In Sub-Saharan Africa, access to rural labs is limited due to unpredictable roads and transport. Labs are often hidden on unmarked streets or attached to a person's home. To solve this problem, Tim Amukele is flying samples from clinics to inaccessible labs using drones. From TEDxClaremontColleges, Amukele explains how asking questions led him to find a new way of delivering better diagnoses to developing countries.

Let’s be hungry to advance how the world cooks | Ranyee Chiang | TEDxPlaceDesNations
   • Let’s be hungry to advance how the wo...

Almost half the world cooks on open fires and traditional stoves using fuels like wood, charcoal and dung. Smoke inhalation from cookstoves results in almost 4 million deaths every year. These stoves also impact the environment, annually consuming 500 million tons of nonrenewable wood. In her passionate talk from TEDxPlaceDesNations, Ranyee Chiang presents the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), a global community dedicated to improving standards in cooking technologies to "advance how the world cooks."

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
