Victorian Premier Danial Andrews says Melbourne's lockdown will be extended for a further seven days as several “mystery cases” have appeared.

Mr Andrews said Victoria recorded 20 locally acquired cases of COVID-19 overnight with six out in the community while infectious and 15 linked to current outbreaks.

“There are a number of mystery cases and cases still being investigated, that really is the most important number,” he said.

“That’s why sadly today the Cabinet of the government, we have met, and we have determined to accept the advice of the chief health officer to extend it for a further period of seven days to 11:59 pm next Thursday.”

Mr Andrews said reopening was “simply not possible” due to the Delta variant and if the state was to end lockdown, case numbers could end up like Sydney.

“I’d love to be standing here announcing that we are coming out of lockdown this coming Thursday, that is simply not possible, we need to go until next Thursday, that is the public health advice.”

“There are too many cases and too cases the origins which are not clear to us, too many unanswered questions, too many mysteries for us to safely come out of lockdown now.”
