I decided to start putting out all my transcribed iterations of Butch Taylor’s parts over Dave Matthews Band’s music. Butch has been the biggest influence on me as a pianist and as such I have spent a lot of time over the years learning and transcribing his parts; both making them as true as I can to what he did, but also adding my own twists to them as well. This video is a 2001 version of So Right. Butch was essentially inaudible in the pro mix so I figured it was a good version to play his parts over.

Notes for Butch’s parts in So Right:

I took some creative liberties with this tune as it's always been hard to be able to tell what exactly Butch is playing over certain sections to a T. More on this below.

Intro: I just doubled the band's parts hitting the "B's" in unison here, then jumped in just before the full band.

Verses: Another where I just simply doubled up with the guitar part (0:22). As far as I can tell, he was either doing this (which Butch was known to do on a lot of tunes, What Would You Say for example), or just sitting out entirely. I opted to join in.

End of the verses leading into the Choruses: Butch would double with Boyd's part here using a string patch on his keyboard. I noted too that with each of these string builds into the choruses, Butch was gradually add more harmonies to the line until the final line where he did three part string harmonies along with Boyd (3:02). If I had taken the time to split my keyboard so the lower register was piano, I'd have continued doing the octave B hits between the string parts but I wasn't able to get that knocked out this time around.

Choruses: After the release of Everyday in 2001, Butch clearly took the time to learn the counter melodies/riffs/licks that Tim Reynolds added to these tunes in the studio. I'll mention more on these as I upload other Everyday tracks, but this tune has a cool lick that Tim did in studio that Butch repeats throughout the entire song over the chorus changes (3:37). After playing this lick, I believe he doubles with the violin part.

Bridge: Not 100% sure what Butch plays here so I just did some noodling over the chords and added a harmonized part in unison with Dave's melody at the end of the Bridge (something Butch has done in other tunes).

Outro Jam: Same part on repeat all the way until the end where the whole band does the hits together.

Hope you enjoy!
