Response to concerns about recent events
Dear colleague,
We are aware that recent events across the country are triggering for many of you: the troubling protests in London, concerns being raised about the misappropriation of flags being placed around our communities, and the recent distressing reports of an incident in Oldbury involving a Sikh woman. We recognise the deep impact such reports can have on you, our patients, and our communities, particularly those who feel more vulnerable as a result.
We want to be clear that UHB stands firmly against all forms of racism, hate, sexual violence, and actions that undermine cohesion. These acts are intolerable and completely incompatible with our values that we uphold every day in caring for our communities. It is the responsibility of all of us to reaffirm our commitment to these values.
We are all proud to work for the NHS, at UHB, and to live and work in and across Birmingham.
Our city is one of the most diverse in the country and we are proud to both be a part of, and to serve, such a diverse community. We are also proud of the diversity of all of you – our people – and are proud that we continue to thrive on that diversity and recognise the unity in our differences. Together, we make UHB what it is.
As an organisation, we do not tolerate bullying, harassment or discrimination of any kind: we must respect and celebrate our individual differences. Our priority remains to have a culture in which every single one of us feels supported to thrive, feels valued and knows that we add value, and we want all of our colleagues to be proud to work for UHB and for our patients to be proud to receive care from us.
By each of us living our values of Kind, Connected and Bold, in line with our Behavioural Framework, we will go a long way to achieving this. Where we see, or hear unacceptable behaviours playing out, we need to call them out and ensure that action is taken.
We are currently celebrating East and South East Asian Heritage Month, focusing on ‘reframing resilience’ and we have a further opportunity to reinforce our unity as we celebrate Black History Month during October. This year’s commitment is ‘standing firm in power and pride’, highlighting the importance of strength and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the black community. More of that to follow over the coming weeks.
