A growing backlash is erupting over government plans to scrap the Troubles Legacy Act — a move that could reopen historic prosecutions against British soldiers who served in Northern Ireland.

Conservative MP Mark Francois and former Brexit Secretary David Davis say the government is betraying ageing veterans who served with honour, accusing ministers of caving to pressure from Sinn Féin and the Irish government. They warn this will create “two-tier justice” — one rule for terrorists, another for British troops.

Over 180,000 people have signed a petition demanding protections for those who served, and pressure is mounting on the government to scrap the proposed remedial order. Veterans say they feel “distressed and betrayed” as the threat of investigation hangs over them in old age.
