Durham, NC is the 4th largest city in North Carolina and is the county seat for Durham County. Durham, NC is the 79th most populous city in the United States with a population of a little less than 280,000 (2019). Durham is part of the Research Triangle which had a population of more than 2 million based on 2014 numbers. Small portions of the city extends into Orange & Wake County.

The land for which Durham sits on today was inhabited by the Eno and Occoneechi ( related to the Sioux and Shakori ). They established a village named Adshusheer. Another interesting fact is that the Great Indian Trading Path was traced through the area now called Durham. Later in 1701 , John Lawson who was a English Explorer called Durham " the flower of the Carolinas".

Durham is named after Bartlett S. Durham who donated a Railway Depot on the current location of the City. The land was donated in 1849. Durham was later incorporated in April 1869 by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly. Durham County was ratified 12 years later in 1881.

Durham takes pride in being home of some of the highest education institutions like Duke University and North Carolina Central University. Duke is known for their high health related standards and is the largest employer in the City.
