Louis Ferrante shares his harrowing first-day experience in Lewisburg Penitentiary. On arrival, he was introduced to various gang leaders. Close to dusk, prison alarms sounded off; the head of the Aryan Brotherhood he'd met earlier had distributed machetes to his gang. The gang launched an attack on Black Muslim inmates, leaving the prison locked down for months. For his safety, he bought a makeshift machete, which he later had to discard due to new metal detectors. He highlights the inmates' creativity as they switch to plastic knives skillfully sharpened into lethal weapons. Despite his terrifying first day, Louis declined the offer of solitary confinement, choosing to remain in general population.
