Williamsburg is recognized as the world's largest living history musuem. It was the thriving capital of the VIrginia Colony from 1699 to 1780, and was Britain's largest settlement in the New World. Williamsburg was the political, cultural, and educational center of the Virginia Colony, a rich and powerful land stretching west to the Mississippi River and north to the Great Lakes.

At the time, the Virginia Colony was the largest, most populous, and most influential of the American Colonies, and was the seat of British power in Colonial America. WIlliamsburg was where the dream of American freedom and independence was taking shape. It was in the town of Williamsburg, that the fundamental concepts of our republic — responsible leadership, a sense of public service, self-government, freedom of religion, and individual liberty — were nurtured under the leadership of patriots such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, George Mason, and Peyton Randolph.

Near the end of the Revolutionary War, the capital of Virginia was moved to the safer and more centrally located city of Richmond. After the move, for nearly a century and a half, Williamsburg was a simple, quiet college town, home of the College of William and Mary. In the early 20th century, the sleepy little town with so much history, was recognized as an ideal location for a living history musuem, since it had changed so little since Colonial times. Decades of restoration and rehabilitation has created an amazing town where you can journey back to Colonial times.
