Leaving your houseplants behind when you go on holiday can feel like rolling the dice. You do all the prep, you leave careful notes, you set your plants up for success… and then you walk out the door hoping for the best. But what actually happens while you’re away?
In this video, I’m sharing the unfiltered truth. I had been gone for more than two weeks, and the very first thing I did when I got back was grab my camera and take you with me on a walkthrough of my plant collection. No watering, no touching up, no rescuing before filming. Just the raw state of my plants after 14 days of being cared for by someone else.
If you’ve ever wondered what your houseplants really do in your absence, this is going to be both reassuring and a little nerve-wracking.
What You’ll See in This Video
The plants that held up beautifully, even without my daily care
The ones that clearly struggled, with yellowing or crispy leaves
A couple of heartbreaking plant deaths (yes, it happens)
A few surprising survivors that thrived better without me
My exact process for preparing houseplants before leaving on a trip
I wanted this video to be as honest as possible. No plant parent wants to come back from holiday to a disaster, but the reality is that some plants are tougher than others. The truth is, even with the best instructions and a trusted caretaker, things don’t always go perfectly.
Preparing Houseplants Before a Trip
I also share some of my personal routines for getting ready to leave my plants. Over the years, I’ve experimented with what works and what doesn’t. From watering schedules to light adjustments, to how I write instructions for anyone looking after them. You’ll hear about some methods that have failed for me, and others that have been surprisingly effective.
I know many of you watching have big plant collections too, and the anxiety of leaving them is real. Hopefully, by showing you what actually happened with mine, you’ll feel better prepared for your own holidays.
Why Some Plants Do Better Without You
One of the most interesting takeaways from this experiment is that certain plants seemed to thrive while I was away. As if they enjoyed a little less fussing, a little more independence. It’s almost rude, right? But in a funny way, it’s also a good reminder: sometimes we love our plants a little too much.
Some tropical and rare houseplants can surprise you with their resilience. On the flip side, others are just naturally a bit more dramatic and will show stress quickly when routines change.
A Realistic Look at Plant Parenting
This isn’t a polished highlight reel. It’s not about showing a perfect, curated collection. It’s the real state of my plants after 14 days without me. And I think there’s value in that honesty. Plant parenting isn’t always glossy leaves and endless growth; sometimes it’s crispy edges, yellow leaves, or even a goodbye to a plant you couldn’t save.
By sharing both the wins and the losses, I hope this video helps you feel less pressure to be perfect, and more inspired to experiment, learn, and enjoy your plants for what they are: living, changing, sometimes unpredictable companions.
