PRESS RELEASE
The most important date in the sporting calendar is now the 31st October 1997 - that’s the UK release date of Actua Soccer 2 featuring the expertise of England captain Alan Shearer. AS2 is the most realistic football simulation yet. Gremlin have developed real motion-captured footballers, playing in authentic stadiums, for real teams along with a boot room full of extra features.
When the original Actua Soccer was released, it set the standard for all of the next-generation football games: it was the first to master the use of motion capture technology, the graphics engine was the first to use polygon characters instead of sprites and the game had an extensive, detailed and context sensitive commentary that is still light years ahead of the field.
Now with Actua Soccer 2, Gremlin are again going to leave the competition standing on the sidelines, as redundant as Eric Cantona’s collar. Actua Sports have gathered the finest team this side of Sao Paolo and top of the list is England captain Alan Shearer, who begins his role as Football Consultant to Gremlin with AS2.
In this capacity Shearer will be overseeing the development of AS2, ensuring that realism levels never flounder and that all in-game tactics and playing systems emulate their real-world counterparts. He will also lend his vast experience to a super-skills section, which will provide gamers with valuable coaching in different areas of Actua Soccer 2 (covering everything from set pieces to tactical scenarios) and provide tips for improving their game.
Motion capture duties will be handled by current Liverpool striker and all-round wunderkind Michael Owen. Owen is still only seventeen, but he is already widely regarded as one of the greatest emerging talents of the decade. For a safe pair of hands, Sheffield Utd’s Simon Tracey was drafted in, maintaining the strong links that exists between Gremlin and Sheffield’s football clubs. Barry Davies will once again be lending his dulcet tones to the commentary, but will this time be aided and abetted by his BBC colleague, ‘Mr’ Trevor Brooking. Finally, Keith Hackett, head of the Referees’ Association, will be on hand to dish out the red and yellows.
Actua Soccer 2 is the definitive football game. 64 current International teams with correct kits and line-ups are represented as well as space for at least 24 further custom teams defined by the user. Gamers will have the opportunity to configure everything from kit-design and team names right down to the individual names and abilities of squad members.
On top of this there are over 20 ‘instantly recognisable’ real-world stadia that have been recreated by the Actua team, giving the game that ‘being there’ feel (you can almost smell the stale pies and Bovril).
For the ultimate challenge Alan Shearer has picked his all time select eleven for you to play against - undoubtedly featuring an Actua Pele!
A full range of weather conditions are included. You could recreate the torrential rain of the 1974 world cup semi final between Holland v Brazil or the blazing Azteca, venue of the 1986 ‘hand of god’ clash between England v Argentina. Fog and snow (featuring the orange ball) are also included for those who prefer their football to be more second division and without the benefits of undersoil heating.
For those 24 hour multi player sessions Actua Soccer 2 will also include user definable competitions, so creating your own cups and leagues won’t be a problem. Man City fans can even recreate the late 80’s high drama of the Zenith Data Trophy, just to get a taste of some silverware. There’s enough flexibility to recreate almost any competition in the world.
Another added feature is to be seen on the training ground, with the opportunity to work on set pieces, ie setting tactics for free kicks and corners. This enables you to decide which players will make runs into space and catch the opposition napping with sophisticated moves, or who’ll get their head up for a ball, thrown into the mixer ?
All that’s missing is a virtual Don Howe advising you to ‘knock it long.’
Finally, there’s the commentary, which will be by far the most realistic ever heard. Using a newly developed system known as ‘ambient realism’, every sound in the game is context sensitive, right through from the roar of the crowd, to the referees’ whistle.
PC Owners with Power VRTM 3D cards will be able to enjoy an accelerated version of Actua Soccer 2. The game will also support 3DFX and other major 3D cards.
If you are a true football fan, or a true fan of games, then Actua Soccer 2 is a an absolute must. 5-3-2, 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 0891-696969: whatever your personal choice of formation; this is going to be the best thing to ever happen to your games machine.
Format: PC, PlayStation and Saturn
