Wayne will be Previewing themes in his forthcoming book,The Humane Economy (Harper Collins/William Morrow, March 2016), Wayne Pacelle will discuss the extraordinary changes afoot in our human relationship with animals. A dramatic shift in public opinion, driven in part by growing awareness of animal behavior and cognition, is ushering in new public policies and business practices that are upending traditional forms of animal exploitation. Entrepreneurs and business leaders are at the forefront of this change, with Petco and PetSmart disrupting the conventional pet store model by forswearing puppy mill suppliers in favor of shelter dogs. Major food retailers – from Whole Foods to Chipotle to Walmart – are now embracing animal welfare and making demands of producers that will upend factory farming. Filmmakers now rely on computer-generated imagery instead of animals to enthrall viewers in epics likeNoah and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Cirque de Soleil continues to dazzle crowds with human acrobats in place of animal performers, and Ringling Bros. announced in March that it will retire its elephants from traveling acts, and SeaWorld is reeling after Blackfish, a tell-all documentary, alerted a huge, youthful following to the company’s mistreatment of orcas. Major cosmetics makers have switched to non-animal testing methods, and startups like Hampton Creek have developed and are selling plant-based proteins that mimic animal products on taste and texture but don’t come with any of the cruelty, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, or other public costs. We’re seeing the foundation stones of a new humane economy being built, where there is a strong alignment between our business and our core values related to animal welfare. It involves unleashing the power of human ingenuity and entrepreneurialism to find solutions to problems of our own making.

For the past decade, Wayne Pacelle, as president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, has been a driver of so many of these changes. He is author he New York Times best-seller The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them (Harper Collins/William Morrow, April 2011).
