Another delve into the archives to October 2022, and a delightful Autumn morning spent at the ‘Chocolate Sunday’ event at the Avon Valley Railway for a ride complete with complimentary chocolate brownie on the unique Fry’s steam Sentinel locomotive 7492!

This interesting little Sentinel locomotive was built in 1928 and spent its entire working life at Fry’s Somerdale Chocolate Factory in Keynsham (just a mile from the Avon Valley Railway). Following scrapping in 1956 it remained on site until 1964 before changed hands several times.

In 2009 one of the Railway’s volunteers Eric Miles, tracked it down to a garden shed in Essex before being able to return it to Bitton the following year. A group of dedicated volunteers has spent the last ten years restoring the locomotive. Following a successful boiler inspection it ran under its own steam for the first time in over sixty years in April 2019.

Due to operational issues she missed the first turn of the morning, but was in action on the delayed 11am, with a little help from the lines resident diesel shunter Andrew Barclay No. 358 ‘Grumpy’. Some interesting exhibitions about the former Cadbury factory and chocolate production process were on display as well. | 16.10.2022
