The VLOOKUP function is useful for quickly finding information in complex spreadsheets. Use can think of the VLOOKUP function as a way to gather information based on specific data input.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to use the VLOOKUP function to pull information from row data based on criteria entered into a target cell.

I will also show you how to add a dropdown menu for the criteria cell to speed up selection.

In computer science, a lookup table is an array that replaces runtime computation with a simpler array indexing operation. The savings in processing time can be significant, because retrieving a value from memory is often faster than carrying out an "expensive" computation or input/output operation.[1] The tables may be precalculated and stored in static program storage, calculated (or "pre-fetched") as part of a program's initialization phase (memoization), or even stored in hardware in application-specific platforms. Lookup tables are also used extensively to validate input values by matching against a list of valid (or invalid) items in an array and, in some programming languages, may include pointer functions (or offsets to labels) to process the matching input. FPGAs also make extensive use of reconfigurable, hardware-implemented, lookup tables to provide programmable hardware functionality.

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet developed by Microsoft for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. It features calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). It has been a very widely applied spreadsheet for these platforms, especially since version 5 in 1993, and it has replaced Lotus 1-2-3 as the industry standard for spreadsheets. Excel forms part of the Microsoft Office suite of software.
