Handle staining:
Clean and sand down the surface. Use some 120-200 grit sandpaper to remove and dirt and open the wood pores.
You can also use a steel ruler to scrap off any layers of grime or unwanted finishing.
Some easy stains are:
Coffee or black tea to give you nice, earthy tones.
Beet or berries or red wine to give a purple or red-ish hue
Vinegar and steel wool: it reacts with the tannins in the wood for a cool, darkened effect
For some of these stains, it helps to heat them up before applying them to help with soaking into the wood.

Fire staining:
A light char will also help to strengthen the wood. If you want to avoid using some live fire, you can use some remains from the fire and steel wool to rub it into the wood.

A lot of these will need multiple layers. You can also layer different ingredients to these to build up different shades. It will also help to heat up some of these stains before applying them to help them soak in the wood better (also a good excuse to brew some coffee or make some mulled wine)

A quick note on the axe head. If you want to create a layer of patina. A lot of these ingredients will also react to the metal to create an interesting look and a protective seal.

Lemon juice
Coffee grinds with oil
