Following a summer of intensive floodplain restoration, Quartz Creek is fully recharged and once again spreading across its historic floodplain. Instead of rushing downstream in a single, confined channel, floodwaters slow and fan out across the landscape, soaking into the ground, recharging groundwater, and reducing the force of high flows that can threaten downstream communities.

This work helps build resilience in the face of increasing flood and wildfire risk. By keeping water on the land longer, restored floodplains support cooler, wetter conditions that benefit the surrounding ecosystem and the people who rely on it. Slower water and the addition of large wood also create the pools, riffles, and sediment deposits that salmon and other native fish and wildlife need to thrive.

High water events from atmospheric rivers and other winter storms offer key moments for learning. Each flood helps us better understand how the restored floodplain is functioning, guiding how we adapt and improve the work over time.
