About USS Croaker:

Launched in 1943, the USS Croaker (SS-246) served valiantly during World War II. As a Gato-class submarine, it was part of the U.S. Navy’s formidable underwater fleet that disrupted enemy shipping lanes and conducted vital reconnaissance missions throughout the Pacific Theater.

Armament and Capabilities:

• Main Armament: 10 x 21-inch torpedo tubes (6 forward, 4 aft)
• Deck Guns: 1 x 5-inch/25 caliber deck gun, 1 x 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun, 1 x 20mm Oerlikon anti-aircraft gun
• Displacement: 1,525 tons (surfaced), 2,424 tons (submerged)
• Length: 311 feet 8 inches
• Beam: 27 feet 3 inches

Service History:

USS Croaker conducted six war patrols during World War II, sinking 11 Japanese ships totaling 46,600 tons, including the light cruiser Nagara. The submarine was decommissioned in 1946 but recommissioned in 1953 as an auxiliary submarine (SSK-246) during the Cold War, serving until its final decommissioning in 1971. It was then converted into a museum ship, where it now educates visitors on the vital role submarines played in naval history.
