Описание к видео Messe ocus Pangur Bán – Reconstructed 9th-Century Irish Poem with Music & Ancient Pronunciation

Messe ocus Pangur Bán – Reconstructed 9th-Century Irish Poem with Music & Ancient Pronunciation
Experience the beauty of early medieval Irish poetry as it might have sounded over 1,100 years ago, in this immersive reconstruction of Messe ocus Pangur Bán – one of Ireland’s oldest surviving literary works, believed to date from the 9th century.
This rendition features:
A faithful recreation of the original Old Irish
Ambient harp-inspired music in the background
A gentle ballad in a manner intended to reflect what the spoken language may have sounded like
What is “Messe ocus Pangur Bán”?
The poem ("I and Pangur Bán") is a short, intimate meditation written by an anonymous Irish monk, comparing his scholarly efforts to those of his white cat, Pangur, who hunts mice while the monk hunts knowledge. It's a rare and charming glimpse into monastic life in early medieval Ireland — blending intellect, solitude, and companionship.
Historical Background:
Date: 9th century (c. 800s AD)
Language: Old Irish
Author: Unknown monk, likely working in a monastic scriptorium
Manuscript: Found in the Reichenau Primer, a Latin-Irish manuscript held at St. Paul’s Abbey in Lavanttal, Austria
Modern Publication: Translated and made famous in English by Robin Flower (Bláthmac), and now frequently cited in Celtic literary studies.

Note from the Creator:
This piece is a creative attempt to bring the past to life. While the pronunciation may not be perfect, every effort was made to honour the sound, soul, and rhythm of the original language. The music has been added to evoke the quiet solitude of a 9th-century monk’s cell, where this poem may have first been whispered into parchment by candlelight.
