Описание к видео Clark's Nutcracker Resource Use in the Greater Yellowstone & North Cascades Ecosystems, T. Schaming

"High-elevation Five-needle White Pines: Science and Management Webinars"
Held the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 12-1 PM MST
Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation, https://whitebarkfound.org/webinar-se...

On January 18, 2022, Dr. Taza Schaming presented "Clark's Nutcracker Resource Use in the Greater Yellowstone and North Cascades Ecosystems"

Speaker bio:
Since 2009, Taza Schaming has been investigating the impact of the decline of whitebark pine on Clark's nutcrackers. She is studying the stability and resilience of the Clark’s nutcracker-whitebark pine mutualism, to help ensure persistence of these species and the nutcracker’s seed dispersal function. She feels lucky to carry out her research in the magnificent Greater Yellowstone and North Cascades ecosystems. Taza finished her PhD at Cornell University in 2016, and is continuing her research as a long-term study as a Wildlife Ecologist through Northern Rockies Conservation Cooperative. Taza spends her free time exploring the woods and world with her six-year-old daughter, Suneva, gardening, hiking, camping and canoeing.

Abstract:
Managers need information on Clark’s nutcracker habitat use and selection, foraging and seed dispersal movement patterns, as well as long-distance movements, to inform whitebark pine management plans, and to help identify and prioritize areas for whitebark pine conservation or restoration, including best locations to plant blister rust resistant seedlings. Tromping through snow, or mud and swarms of mosquitos, I have been trapping, surveying, radio-tracking, and satellite-tracking nutcrackers since 2009, to study nutcracker behavior. In this presentation, I will discuss the best available science on how our knowledge of nutcracker life history impacts whitebark pine management strategies. I will also focus on (1) how landscape- and local-scale habitat influences occurrence and detection probability of Clark’s nutcrackers, and (2) Clark’s nutcracker inter-seasonal and inter-annual variability in home range and movement patterns in the Great Yellowstone and North Cascades Ecosystems.
