I have alway been a fan of the 2002 series of BMWs but was disappointed with the two Turbo models we had as both were a bit underwhelming until they were overwhelming and hard to keep in the power band. I was a bit taken back the first time out in this 2002 as it had a linear torque curve that provided effortless acceleration and extremely spirited driving manners. A far cry from the Turbo models I had experienced years earlier.

BMW's incredibly successful “02” series of vehicles were produced from 1966 to 1977. While the top of the line in performance was the legendary 2002 Turbo, it was hardly a marketing success. The same could not be said of the 2002tii built from the end of 1971 until 1975, they were and remain immensely popular all these years later.

The 2002tii came about from a 1971 BMW management decision to further improve and upgrade 2002ti, this time by developing the engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. This brought power up to 128bhp at 5,800rpm. There were numerous improvements as well as reliability fixes for the some of previous, twin-carbed 2002ti model issues. These updates and modifications were both obvious and welcome and sales were a hit both in Europe and in the lucrative USA/North American markets.

While practical in all regards, there was little doubt the tii had a Sports Car like feel and presence and performance was far better than adequate. In a time when the offerings from American manufacturers were bloated and underpowered, the tii offered something refreshing and different for a youthful and enthusiastic crowd. They were a hit when new and have always maintained a cult-status appeal with a loyal fan base that never ceases to appreciate the unique nature and charisma the 2002tii offers.

The previous owner acquired this vehicle in 2013 restoring it over a five year period, finally finishing it in 2018. There are some 45 pages of internal receipts and records as spread sheets that document the entire restoration. Essentially if something could be taken apart, it was and fully rebuilt and fully restored as new.

After the completion of the restoration, it took a high award the first time being shown in 2018 at a BMW CCA Concours Event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The car has since then been driven very little but always carefully serviced and cared for.

In preparation for the return sale on Bring-A-Trailer, the car was sent David Nutley’s DNA automotive for full service verifications and safety checks. A new turn signal switch was installed and the AC system purged and recharged. It now blows once again ICE COLD and it is ready for any manner of enthusiastic use by her fortunate new caretaker.
