Many notes in guitar chords are duplicated
If you are muting certain strings check to see if you really need those notes
A muted string plays no note at all, so it can’t be wrong

If your fingers mute strings beside them, you may not even need that note. Basic open chords, called triads, only have 3 notes so any triad that has more than 3 strings ringing has duplicated notes.

Take A Major: most beginners can’t get the first string, the skinny E string, to ring. The thing is, you already have an E on the D string. If that E is ringing as well as the open A and the C# (2nd fret, 2nd string) you have the required notes. A muted string does not play a wrong note. It plays no note at all, so you’re good.

Lots of chords have duplicate notes and which ones ring in each version of the same chord is called a “voicing”, so it’s not cheating. It’s a thing. I use this muting technique all the time.

Go for it!
