Sören Sieg: Consolation. African Suite No. 20, Third Movement (Boreas Quartett)

Ixesha in Xhosa means time, and this refers to the African Proverb: "The Europeans have the clock, the Africans have the time." I tried to capture this different, floating, African feeling of time in this work. All four movements are centered around one theme and there are many repetitions and variations, as if the time slowed down, went in circles or stood still.

This third movement, Consolation, ist about a mother holding her child, that has hurt itself, in her arm, lulling the child, telling it stories to distract it and keep whispering "Everything will be fine".

I wish to thank the Boreas Quartet from Bremen – Jin-Ju Baek, Julia Fritz, Luise Manske and Elisabeth Champollion - for this fantastic and emotionally touching performance. You really brought the piece to life!

Ixesha bedeutet Zeit auf Xhosa, und ich spiele damit auf das afrikanische Sprichwort an: „Die Europäer haben die Uhr, die Afrikaner haben die Zeit.“ Ich habe versucht, dieses andere, schwebende, afrikanische Zeitgefühl in diesem Stück einzufangen. Alle vier Sätze kreisen um jeweils ein Thema; es gibt eine Vielzahl von Wiederholungen und Variationen, also ob die Zeit sich verlangsamt,

Dieser dritte Satz, Consolation, erzählt von einer Mutter, die ihr Kind beruhigt, das sich verletzt hat; sie wiegt es im Arm, erzählt ihm Geschichten, um es abzulenken, und flüstert immer wieder: Es ist alles gut.
