In 1882, students at the Imperial Theatre School on Rossi Street in St Petersburg got an unforgettable Christmas tree—personally hosted by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, director of the Imperial Theatres. Years later, dancer Nikolai Legat remembered the candles, sweets… and the silver watch he couldn’t stop winding.

Fast forward ten years: The Nutcracker premieres at the Mariinsky (1892), with costumes designed from Vsevolozhsky’s sketches—and student dancers from the same school onstage. Among them: Sergei Leh-GAT, Nikolai’s younger brother, who created the role of the Nutcracker Prince in the original production.

A small true story—linking one school, one family, and the world’s most famous Christmas ballet.
