STORYLINE:
Hundreds of evacuees from Lebanon headed for the Syrian border on Tuesday, with an Israeli air and sea blockade preventing people from fleeing the week-old conflict via alternative routes.
Despite a flurry of diplomatic efforts aimed at stemming the escalating violence, foreigners and Lebanese nationals alike queued to leave the country.
Crowds of people waited at the border crossing in al-Massnaa, hoping to pass into Syria, many of them en route to other countries.
One man said he praised the courage of the Lebanese people. "It is our land and our blood for the sake of resistance," he said of the fighting between the Israelis and Hezbollah guerrillas.
A Canadian man visiting Lebanese relatives in Saida said his family had also been forced to leave.
"We are just going to Kuwait and trying to wait until this whole thing is over. Maybe come back to Lebanon, because we are from Saida and all of our stuff is in Saida," he said.
The Israeli bombardment continued throughout the day on Wednesday in south Lebanon, forcing whole families to head north to escape the onslaught.
Israeli jets also carried out two raids on southern Beirut - where Hezbollah is known to occupy many buildings - and the eastern city of Baalbek, also a hezbollah stronghold.
