The ERDF aims to strengthen economic and social cohesion in the European Union by correcting imbalances between its regions. The ERDF focuses its investments on several key priority areas:
Innovation and research;
The digital agenda;
Support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs);
The low-carbon economy.

Valencia operational programme comes under the "Regional competitiveness and employment" objective. and has a total budget of some €2.2 billion. The financing provided by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) totals around €1.3 billion, representing some 3.8% of total Community contributions in support of Spain under the cohesion policy 2007-2013.
