Gamora is one of the most fascinating characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — adopted daughter of Thanos, elite assassin, and famously referred to as “The Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy.” From her very first appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), the MCU established her as a highly skilled warrior capable of going toe-to-toe with some of the galaxy’s most dangerous opponents.
But here’s the problem — if Gamora is supposed to be that powerful, why are there moments in the MCU where she gets taken down far too easily? And one of the biggest offenders happens in her very first movie.
The Problem in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, after the chaos on Xandar involving the Orb, Star-Lord, Rocket, and Groot, all of them end up arrested and taken to the Kyln, a high-security space prison. This is where we see a scene that doesn’t quite add up for Gamora’s established skill level. Within minutes of arriving, she’s attacked by a small group of random prisoners — 3 nameless background characters who have zero backstory, no special weapons, and no training that we know of. Somehow, they manage to overpower and restrain Gamora. This is the same Gamora who was raised by Thanos, trained to assassinate the most dangerous beings in the universe, and is supposed to be able to dismantle opponents in seconds.
It’s one of those moments that makes you scratch your head. Why would Marvel spend time hyping her as an unstoppable fighter… only to have her lose to a bunch of extras whose names we’ll never know? The “Deadliest Woman” Reputation In the comics and in much of the MCU marketing, Gamora’s combat reputation is legendary. She has:
Enhanced strength, agility, and stamina
Mastery of multiple weapons and martial arts forms
Years of assassin training from Thanos himself
The ability to take down armed opponents in close quarters
When we think of MCU assassins, we put Gamora in the same conversation as Black Widow, Winter Soldier, and Okoye — but arguably stronger due to her alien physiology and brutal upbringing. Which is why this Kyln prison scene sticks out like a sore thumb. Possible Explanations
There are a few ways we could rationalize this plot hole, though none are entirely satisfying:
Gamora was holding back.
Maybe she didn’t want to kill anyone in the prison, so she allowed herself to be restrained instead of unleashing her full ability. But even holding back, she should have been able to knock these attackers out cold. The script needed her vulnerable. Sometimes character logic is sacrificed for story beats. The scene needed to introduce Drax, so Gamora had to be restrained for him to make his entrance and threaten her.
She underestimated the threat.
Maybe she didn’t expect these prisoners to move on her so quickly, and they caught her off guard. But again, we’re talking about the “deadliest woman in the galaxy” — situational awareness should be her number one skill.
It’s simply bad writing.
The simplest answer is that the scene was written for drama, not logic, and it unintentionally undercut Gamora’s reputation before audiences could see what she was fully capable of.
Why It Matters
Moments like this are more than nitpicks — they can affect how a character is perceived by audiences. If you tell viewers that a character is elite, but then immediately show them losing to low-level opposition, it creates inconsistency in the storytelling.
This is especially true in the MCU, where power levels can be inconsistent between movies. For Gamora, this inconsistency is frustrating because she’s such a unique character: When the storytelling undercuts her abilities for convenience, it undermines the “deadliest woman in the galaxy” branding the MCU worked so hard to build.
What the MCU Did Right Later Thankfully, later films like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame gave Gamora more moments to show her skills. From taking on Proxima Midnight to going blade-to-blade with Nebula, we saw flashes of the elite warrior she was meant to be. Still, that Kyln scene remains a sore spot for fans who want consistent, logical portrayals of their favorite heroes.
Final Thoughts This video kicks off PLOTHOLES Volume 1, where I break down moments in comic book movies that don’t quite add up. For Gamora, the inconsistency in her strength level is a perfect example of how small details can weaken a character’s overall arc. Watch the video to see my full breakdown, possible fixes for the scene, and why consistency in power levels is important for storytelling in shared universes like the MCU. Do you think Marvel messed up here, or do you buy the in-universe explanations? Drop your thoughts in the comments — I want to hear your take.
