Born in Rathfriland, County Down, Ireland in 1842, Scott fought in the New Zealand Wars, served as an Anglican lay preacher, robbed a bank disguised in a black cloak and crepe mask as "Captain Moonlite," and spent ten years in Pentridge Prison — where he met James Nesbitt, the young man who would change everything.
Together they rode through the moonlit Australian bush. Together they faced the siege at Wantabadgery Station in 1879. And when Nesbitt fell in the gunfight, witnesses reported that Scott "wept over him like a child and kissed him passionately."
Awaiting execution in Darlinghurst Gaol, Scott wrote over 60 letters — none of which were ever sent. On his finger he wore a ring woven from a lock of Nesbitt's hair. His final words:
"My dying wish is to be buried beside my beloved James Nesbitt, the man with whom I was united by every tie which could bind human friendship. We were one in hopes, in heart and soul, and this unity lasted until he died in my arms."
His wish was denied. He was hanged on January 20, 1880, and buried alone at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
115 years later, in January 1995, two Gundagai women — Christine Ferguson and Sam Asimus — discovered his letters and campaigned to fulfill his dying wish. A horse-drawn hearse carried his remains through the streets of Gundagai as townspeople lined the road in period costume. He was reinterred beneath a eucalyptus tree, near James Nesbitt, in North Gundagai Cemetery.
In 2025, the NSW Government listed their graves on the State Heritage Register — officially recognizing their story as one of the few documented same-sex relationships in 19th-century Australia.
Heritage Minister Penny Sharpe: "Captain Moonlite and James Nesbitt were outcasts even among outcasts, who might have lived very different lives in more contemporary times."
