Why was Bhishma’s death not shown completely in the Mahabharata? Well, Bhishma was pierced by Arjuna’s arrows on the 10th day of the Kurukshetra war and fell on a bed of arrows that Arjuna made for him. But Bhishma didn’t die right away.

According to the epic, Bhishma had the boon of Ichchha Mrityu – he could choose the time of his death. Though injured, he stayed alive for 58 days lying on that arrow bed, giving counsel and wisdom to both the Pandavas and Kauravas. He shared the Vishnu Sahasranama and taught King Yudhishthira about dharma and governance.

Bhishma finally chose to leave his body on the auspicious day of Uttarayana — the winter solstice when the sun begins its northward journey. This day is still commemorated as Bhishma Ashtami.

So even though the war saw him fall on the 10th day, his real death happened much later, marking an era of sacrifice, duty, and dharma that Bhishma epitomized.

That’s why the Mahabharata and many TV shows show him speaking with his mother Ganga and others after the war – because he was alive, waiting for the right moment to depart.

Bhishma’s story is not just about a warrior’s fall, but about patience, sacrifice, and ultimate liberation.
