A major disruption in Microsoft Corp.'s cloud services caused widespread flight cancellations and delays across the world on Friday. The outage forced several airlines to ground planes and disrupted flight operations.

Frontier Airlines, based in Denver and a unit of Frontier Group Holdings Inc., was significantly impacted. The airline grounded flights for over two hours due to issues with Microsoft's services. Frontier resumed operations around 11 p.m. New York time, lifting a nationwide pause on departures. The outage also impacted reservations and bookings, affecting the airline's booking and check-in systems as well as boarding pass access.

Microsoft's status pages indicated ongoing problems with Azure cloud and Microsoft 365 services, particularly in the central US region. "We are aware of this issue and have engaged multiple teams. We’ve determined the underlying cause," stated Microsoft. "We are currently applying mitigation. Customers should see signs of recovery at this time as mitigation applies across resources in the region."

Heathrow Airport and Ryanair issued warningsabout disruptions caused by a global IT outage. Heathrow stated that the issue is impacting some of its systems but assured that flights remain operational. The airport advised passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information and noted that contingency plans are in place to minimize impact.

A spokeswoman stated, "Departures are taking place," while warning of potential delays as operations ramped up.
