Описание к видео PE Exam Practice Problem #69: Site Development | Safety (OSHA) - Slope Stability

Welcome to SolvedIn6: Free practice problems for the Professional Engineering Exam! Each question is styled after those created by the NCEES, and is usually solved in under 6 minutes, which is the average time you will have to solve each question on the Professional Engineering Exam.

In this problem, an excavation is being performed next to an existing structure. The OSHA technical manual covering excavations classifies this soil as Type C. Given the previous information, the problem asks how much horizontal perimeter will be able to remain between the excavation and the structure, if any?

Basically this problem is asking about slope requirements for a Type C soil. Lets go to the reference manual – the keywords we can pull out of the problem statement would be either “OSHA” or “Type C”.
1. We will consider the case for excavations that are less than 20 feet deep. This provides us with the slope requirements.
2. From there, we can use the existing depth given by the problem along with the slope to find the horizontal requirements for the excavation.
3. Finally, we can subtract the amount calculated above from the amount of horizontal space between the building and the excavation.

Please note that newer versions of the reference manual may have been released since this video was recorded. The search terms are usually still correct, but the page numbers listed in the video will be different.
