The Story of Bishar al-Hafi: From Sin to Sanctity

Bishar al-Hafi (meaning “Bishar the Barefoot”) was once known as a man who lived a life of heedlessness and indulgence in worldly pleasures. He was far from religious, immersed in a lifestyle of entertainment and sin.

One day, while walking through the streets, Bishar saw a piece of paper lying on the ground. When he picked it up, he realized it had the Name of Allah written on it. Moved by a sudden feeling of reverence and respect, he cleaned the paper, perfumed it, and placed it in a dignified place at home.

That night, a pious man saw a dream in which Allah said to him:

“Go to Bishar and tell him: Just as he honored My Name, I have honored him. Just as he purified My Name, I have purified his heart. I have accepted him among My beloved ones.”

The man rushed to find Bishar, who was still living in sin. When he delivered the message, it struck Bishar’s heart like lightning. He broke down in tears, repented sincerely, and immediately turned away from his old life.

From that moment forward, Bishar became a devoted ascetic, known for his deep humility, love for Allah, and spiritual insight. Out of humility and remembrance of his transformation, he chose to walk barefoot for the rest of his life—hence the name Bishar al-Hafi.

He later became one of the most revered saints of the 9th century in the Islamic world.
