Parents across America are raising concerns about the National Education Association (NEA), the nation's largest teachers union, and its alleged shift towards promoting far-left ideologies in classrooms. Erika Sanzi, senior director of communications at Defending Education and a former NEA member, described the union's evolution as "extreme." Sanzi recalled receiving partisan mailers during her time as a dues-paying member, but now claims the organization is run by "radical ideologues."
Sanzi criticized the NEA's training materials, which she says instruct teachers to "center race, class, and gender" in communications and treat dissent as oppression. She argued that the union's leadership is framing opposition as "villains," labeling them as "transphobes, racists, and fascists."
Despite being a private organization, the NEA represents public school teachers funded by taxpayer dollars. Sanzi noted that while teachers now have the option not to join the union due to a Supreme Court ruling, the default is still membership unless specific steps are taken to opt out. She emphasized that many rank-and-file members are likely unaware of the union's current direction.
