"And Hannah Prayed…" (1 Samuel 2:1) This is a song of Triumph! Of Victory and Vindication.
Enjoy a vibrant, musical rendition of Hannah's Prayer in 1 Samuel chapter 2, restoring the Hebrew poetry and meaning to its original intended format: Song.
Some might call it a "song of humility..." Perhaps because it comes from the Bible. Perhaps because speaks of resisting pride and arrogance." And perhaps because it is composed by a woman.
But this is a woman's victory song. And it is anything but humble.
This is a song of triumph, Hannah's victory march against all those who ridiculed and looked down on her for her former infertility.
The "proud" who are now to keep silent and be humbled by God are Hannah's rivals. Most overt is the statement, "she who hath many children has grown feeble," (1 Samuel 2:5, NKJV). This nothing less than a direct rebuke against Hannah's rival wife, Peninnah.
Peninnah, who once taunted Hannah because she had children, and Hannah did not.
There is a time and place for humility. This prayer, for Hannah, was not that moment. Her son, Samuel, was her hard-won vindication in the eyes of her community. Here, she takes her moment to declare that vindication, to proclaim that God is on her side, openly before all gathered that day in the Tabernacle, the most holy place in Ancient Israel.
A thousand years after Hannah, another mother would pray a strikingly similar prayer...
We call that prayer "The Magnificat" (Luke 1:46-55), sung by Mary to celebrate becoming the mother of Jesus. It is one of the most famous passages in the entire Bible.
The similarities between Mary's song and Hannah's are undeniable, and likely no coincidence. Mary, the Jewish girl, was almost certainly familiar with Hannah's story, and would perhaps have committed her prayer-the song of a Hebrew matriarch-to memory.
This does not diminish the power or impact of either song. It only highlights the significance and influence of Hannah on Jewish history. For a thousand years, this ordinary Hebrew woman was remembered. Women and girls sang her victory song again and again, finally reviving it to fit the circumstances of probably the most famous woman in all of human history-Mary, the "mother of God."
What matters most, of course, is the cutting theme and focus of both prayers-their bold declaration that God will fight with the humiliated, the downtrodden, the dismissed, and the denigrated against the proud and arrogant wrong-doers of this world.
The Purpose of this Video:
Hebrew prayers were sung, and this musical rendition restores the timeless poetry of the prayer to some shadow of its original life through music, rhythm, stunning animated imagery, and thoughtful language updated from the King James Version of the bible for today's listener.
We can only guess at what these songs originally sounded like. That's what this rendition is: A guess, aided and abetted by recent advances in AI, allowing me to present the profound messages and teachings of Scripture to a modern audience in ways more compelling, more accessible, and even more authentic than the methods too often used to teach bible in the past.
Music is a memory device. I dare you to listen to this song a few times and not have portions of it memorized, just from listening.
➤ Part of my Bible Psalms and Prayers Series, created to help modern people rediscover the power of these ancient poems as they were meant to be discovered - not just read, but sung and experienced.
🎶 Perfect for personal reflection, worship, and meditative Bible study.
*A note on translation: Contrary to popular opinion, the King James Version (KJV) remains one of the most faithfully translated English versions of the bible. The New King James (NKJV) is an adequate update of the original that I recommend for bible study. I use the original King James here because it is not copyrighted, and therefore usable (and modifiable) without any legal worries.
