Lean Manufacturing Quick Changeover, Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED)

This is a powerful lean tool for removing waste and frustration connecting with many aspects of work.

This lean tool was developed by Shigeo Shingo with Toyota. This is also called S.M.E.D. (single minute exchange of die) Toyota took changeovers of dies that took over six hours and reduced the amount of time to under ten minutes. It uses a NASS car pitstop approach to equipment changeovers and setups.

I saw factories used this same methodology to accomplish the same improvements.

Not just for manufacturing, any business can and should make use of lean quick changeover. Restaurants must prep the kitchen and hospitals prep waiting and operating rooms. Quick change over (setup reduction) removes waste and increases reliability in all setups.

Lean Manufacturing Quick Changeover Tutorial
Quick Changeover is a basic lean tool that almost any environment can use is some fashion.

• Construction
• Landscaping
• Restaurants
• Hospitals
• Office

Lean Manufacturing Quick Changeover gives you a framework to follow anytime there is a setup taking place before work can be done.

Quick changeover knowledge gives employees the ability to identify waste connected with setups of any type.

As you gain experience, you get better. This is a program that all employees can engage in as part of lean and kaizen.

Use a lean expert with experience in quick changeover. You want someone that breaks the rules, but follows the best course of action for the environment you have. Not Bryan’s way, Bob’s way or engineering way….but the right way as proven by experimentation.
